Welcome to 2015, where we will surely meet our robot overlords and Pepsi Perfect will be our only available beverage. Also where I’m reviewing a ton of Arcana stuff. Today, the scent with the most requests from the lovely posters on IMAM: Haint.
The sweet, melancholy essence of a Southern ghost drifting through dark mountain hollows and crumbling neo-classical mansions. White musk, vanilla musk, Madagascar vanilla, sugarcane, and a faint trail of white pepper.
In the bottle, Haint is a peppery, musky vanilla. I’m a little scared, because Arcana’s pepper notes sometimes overpower on my skin.
Wet on skin, the pepper is softer and the sugary vanilla musk is the star of the show. It’s delicate and pretty. During dry down, the pepper kind of pops in and out of the foreground, but eventually makes up its mind and fades into the background, just providing a nice counterpoint to the vanilla musk, keeping it from being overly sweet or girly.
Sillage and lasting power are good. I didn’t put on much and I could still smell it wafting around when I moved my hands, and it was still clinging to my skin nearly 12 hours later.
I wasn’t sure I’d like this one, because I’ve read some reviews that call it more peppery than Frilly Underpinnings, which is ALL PEPPER ALL THE TIME on me. But I didn’t find that to be true, thankfully. It reminds me a bit of Firebird’s Almond Milk, though without the almond note of course, and less sweet, with a tiny kick of pepper. But it’s got a similarly comforting vanilla musk vibe. If you like Almond Milk, you’ll probably like Haint. If Almond Milk was too sweet for you, you might just love Haint.
Elevator Pitch: Soft vanilla musk with a tiny hint of pepper. Not overly sweet.
On deck for tomorrow: Ambrosia!
