haus of gloi ploughman

ploughmanWell worn leather, dirt n’ dandelions, carrot, a pinch of tobacco and a light sheen of feral skin musk.

In the imp, Ploughman smells like dirt and leather. But it’s not dirty – it’s clean and fresh. On skin it starts out the same, but with a bit of that grassy dandelion element in there too. After a while the carrot peeks out, very slightly sweet, and I don’t smell the leather quite as much, and the end result is a scent that smells like nothing so much as a vegetable garden on a spring day.

As it dries further, I get a little hit of tobacco, spicy and warm. It gets less damp and the leather comes out again. Ultimately that’s how it stays – dark, damp dirt, leather, green, and slightly sweet with a touch of warm spiciness. It smells like you’ve been running around outside all day (but not in a sweaty way) and I pretty much just want to bathe in it.

If you like HoG’s Samhain, you will like this – they’re similar scents, all dirt and atmosphere, but Ploughman is fresh and green where Samhain is chilly and herbal.

Would I buy it again? Yes. I didn’t expect to want a full bottle of this, but I really  should’ve known better since I love Samhain. I’m a sucker for these kinds of evocative outdoorsy scents. On the list it goes.

    • Ploughman is great! It’s my favorite from HoG’s spring scents for sure. It isn’t very dark, but it’s very earthy and definitely not sweet or flowery or anything like that. Have you tried Samhain? You would probably like that one even more.

    • Strange! I will have to see if I still have my Samhain sample – if I do I’d be happy to send it to you if you’d like. Ploughman as well, since I have a bottle of that on the way.

    • Rachel has promised to supply me with the last drops of her Ploughman sample, but if you still have that Samhain sample I would be thankful for a donation! I do have some samples that might be to your taste in return!

    • Hurrah for Ploughman! Samhain is also one of my favorites. Nadja, I am sure you would like that one. It’s not really dark or deep either, but the dry down especially is one of the most gorgeous things I’ve ever smelled, just like wind, earth, and autumn leaves. I’ve tried to break it down, imagining notes they use, and I’m certain that it contains lavender, dirt (which is one of their notes!), and anise, and whatever else makes it smell so absurdly good.

    • Liber Vix – Samhain really is one of the most true-to-concept atmospheric scents I’ve ever smelled. It’s kind of uncanny!

Nadja – I found my Samhain sample! So it’s yours. If you want to shoot me an email (aschronister AT we can work out the details.
